The Official Poker Rules

Poker is a card game that can be played for small amounts or large sums of money. It is popular in casinos around the world, and is often played as a tournament event at major events such as the World Series of Poker.

The game is played with a standard pack of 52 cards, sometimes containing one or two jokers, and the highest hand wins. The cards are ranked (from high to low): Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and Wild Cards, which take on any suit and rank as they please.

Players place bets into a pot of chips during betting intervals, and the winner is the player who has the best hand. At the end of the betting interval, all bets are compared.

A player may not make a bet or raise until they have had their turn to bet, and all previous players in the betting interval have either checked or made a bet. If a player checks during the betting interval, they must call a bet made by the next person in the interval or drop from the game.

It is also against the rules for a player to play a card after another has folded or before betting is complete. This is called “angle shooting” and is very unprofessional, especially in the early stages of a game.

If you see a player making an unethical move, such as angle shooting, you should alert the dealer or a floor person in order to prevent them from doing it again. This will ensure that everyone is playing their game the way they want, and will improve the atmosphere of the table for all.
