The Official Poker Guide

The game of poker is an American card game that combines chance with skill. It is played in private homes, poker clubs, casinos and over the Internet. It is sometimes called the national card game of the United States and its play and jargon permeate American culture. The game has a long history and many variants exist. Most poker games are characterized by betting rounds and a series of turns in which players may call, raise or fold. The object of the game is to make the best five-card hand. The game is a combination of luck and strategy, with the better players generally achieving greater success.

In home games and some tournaments, chips are used instead of paper money. The color of the chip indicates its value, with white chips being worth a minimum ante or bet; red chips are typically worth five whites; and blue and black chips are usually worth ten or twenty whites. The colors are used to allow security systems to monitor the game, as they are easier to see than denominations on a bankroll.

In a tournament, players must buy-in for a fixed amount of chips at the beginning of the event. The remaining prize pool is then divided according to the players’ final standings in the tournament. The winning player receives all the chips in the pot. Those who have not received any money from the kitty may “cut” one low-denomination chip from the next pot in which more than one raise occurs.
