Photographer: Stephen Tamiesie

Stephen Tamiesie is a photographer based out of Santa Barbara, CA. I stumbled upon his work over at Behance and was instantly drawn to it. Stephen’s collection of work doesn’t rely on fancy light set ups or obvious photoshop work but, focuses on just raw compositions. Stephen’s compositions all share strong graphic qualities using shape & form, patterns, perspective and positive tension while staying close to the Golden Section. Stephen is able to capture an array of emotion using everyday subject matter thats beauty and potential is often overlooked and unappreciated by the not so keen eye. I could even go as far as his work sharing some subtile “new realism” qualities as Wayne Thiebaud and Andrea Galvani’s pattern compositions. Amazing work Stephen!

You can purchase Stephen Tamiesie’s photography at the Len’s Modern Gallery.

Enjoy!

Emperor X

I dug this album up the other day and it still sounds as good as it did back in 04. Emperor X for the most part is a one man show with similarities to the band “Atom & His Package”. Emperor X’s sound ranges from electronic elements to basically any tangible object you can imagine, backed with a vocabulary all to it’s own. The songs posted below are off his Central Hug/Friendlyarmy/Fractaldunes album; my fav.

There’s also apparently a small documentary soon to be released about Chad Matheny aka Emperor X; I’m keeping my eye out for it.

Enjoy!

Zoot Woman

My buddy and fellow designer Demetre Arges was playing some office tunes the other day from “Zoot Woman”. I instantly fell in love with them. The band has been around for quite sometime now (2003ish). I don’t know how I ever missed these guys?! Their sound is remenisant of Hall & Oats, Queens of the Stone Age, Fuji Miyagi with a The Pet Shop Boys flare. A great blend of driving basslines, sexy/aire vocals, warm analog sounding synths and minimalist compositions. I can almost guarantee that after you hear the song “It’s Automatic” you’ll catch yourself singing the chorus for quite some time. I know I can’t get it out of my head!

Enjoy!

Phoenix : Wolfgang Amadeus

I’ve been a fan of the French band “Phoenix” since their first release “United” came out in 2002. Their latest album (not fully released), “Wolfgang Amadeus” stays true to their original sound but, also departs off into some really refreshing subtle electronica. The song “Love Like a Sunset” really stands apart from the rest with synth sounds you’d hear by artist’s such as Boards of Canada and or Ulrich Schnauss. The last quarter of so of the song also switches gears and the feels like a something reminiscent of “The Who”.

Yet, again the majority of the tracks have that four on the floor indie sound similar to The Stokes etc. Not into that stuff at all. I posted 2 of the stand out tracks from the new album as well as 2 of my old favorites.

Enjoy!

The Art of Rex Ray

I just recently a bought some art from Rex Ray, a mixed media/collage/fine art artist based in San Francisco, CA. His work has a strong graphic quality which combines mid-century modern color palettes and shapes with touches of psychedelia. Rex Ray and Wayne Thiebaud are by far my favorite artists at the moment. Pretty awesome that they are both from Northern California too.

Rex Ray’s work can be found in galleries all over Northern California and has been featured in Gallery 16 numerous times over the past few years. Commercially his work can be found at Bank of America Headquarters, Modern Twist, CB2 and the SFMOMA just to list a few.

Enjoy!

An interview with Rex Ray

Man, I could not agree more with his feelings/struggles towards being creative.

Here are just a few of my favorite works of Rex.
